The shrieking ghosts of rain
a-charging on beastly winds
rose unbidden
without hint
slashed
dashed
They raced
through our yard
– crossed the pond
with lightning jolt
Quick thump
Crack!
R-R-R-roll!
Tree arms vainly attempt
to cover un-bowing heads.
Deep breath.
Rose light breaks through.

Quadrille #12
Bjorn, our host, invites us to write a Quadrille that somehow includes “…the word rose, a wonderful flower, but also a color, a name, a verb (both making something rosy, the past tense of rise). One of the most used (and misused words in poetry… Let’s see the world in rose-tinted glasses or bring forth the thorns…”.

Super description of a quick summer storm. And I love the photo of Lucky Jack looking out at the storm.

Thank you! I’ve been going through Mary Oliver’s Handbook — challenged to by a fellow poet. It’s making my head hurt.

I think only a summer storm can end in such rosy shimmer…. love it.

When I was growing up in Minnesota, the summer storms would come like a cleaning crew — everything would appear so crisp and clear afterwards. Glad you enjoyed it, Bjorn!

I can see the impact of Mary Oliver’s book in your diction. Quick / thump/ crack – those words bring us up short, just like the sounds of the storm itself. Brilliantly done!

When you grow up on the Northern Plains — well, the Minneapolis section of it — breathless is the best response to a summer storm… if you survive it. Thank you!

I’ve noticed the American poets have much more weather than we do…

No doubt. We are impressed by the natural workings of Mother Earth. We fail to recognize the fact that it happened once… it’ll happen again. And we’ll commemorate it in a poem!

Storms can come up very quick and fierce here too…and then they’re done…sun peeks through again with maybe a rainbow or two. I enjoyed your sound words, adds to the ferocity coming down on those roses. I love that cute kitten watching outside too!

I know, and what a great name for a cat! Down to five lives already, no doubt. Thank you for sharing the storm!

My pleasure, Chaley. 🙂 It reminds me of a childhood scene looking at the endless rain from the windowsill.
