Leap of disbelief sparked
by many heartbreaks.
Why play doubtful hands
when reason holds aces?
Cannot logically prove
that you will draw
a hand that wins.
Cut your losses.
Throw
it in
without checking
your cards.
End a lost night
with Uber fare.
What’s the word Charley!

Is that the sound of too much to drink?

Possibly. But it’s also the word for dVerse’s Quadrille night thingie.

Yes, was trying to push it just a bridge too far. Lol!

I wonder if “reason holds aces” although it may be better than nothing. Nice poem.

It all goes back to the title. Thank you, Frank!

There is only one rule in gambling… the bank always wins. Better cut your losses and leave… Love where your writing took you.

Thank you! But then again… it depends upon the game, doesn’t it? I’m glad you liked it.

Thank you! Often in poetry cards and poker ends up not being about cards and poker.

Too rich for my blood – I fold!
This is so clever, Charley! Interesting assumptions and results.

Thank you! As always, my guess is that you saw through my poem’s guise! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Nah – that’s why I folded. I think I need more time with your poem to really get it. I see it as being about relationships, but perhaps not what you meant… ???

It definitely could fit in that. I think I built in a bit of ambiguity when I wrote.

why begin in the first place?

I suppose that, to answer that, you need to know what the game represents. Rain, in literature, isn’t always rain… unless it is. Perhaps this is beyond a simple night’s game of poker. …or not.
In answer to your question: To win.

Knew I shouldn’t have called my never-bluffing niece’s hand this Christmas Eve! Did it anyway! Lucky I didn’t need to look for Uber fare! Love the piercing insight you embed within your satire, Charley!

Good one, Charley. Cut your losses before you have no money for Uber.

Well, of course I interpreted that as a parallel between gambling with cards and with love. That fear yet love of risk, the invariable disappointment, the addiction… and that cynical ending in an Uber taxi.

Clever! An ass-sumption can be quite a “sumptuous ass” — once bet, costs a fortune of reason!

Depending on the game, maybe it would be better to ride out the hand and see what comes? And what are the stakes? Is the possible reward worth the gamble? Perhaps not this time.
