A Pinch of Pepper

Beatles2

Cryptic concept.

(Beach Boys bring Pets)

Sing-along singles.
Surreptitious signals.
Fifty years, hippies still seeking.

(Blue Moodies make many)

Starkey sticks it.
McCartney makes it.
Lennon envisions it.
Harrison Vishu’s it.

(Dark Side does one better)

Twenty… Fifty…

Paul still asking the essential question.

It’s Quadrille night at dVerse Poets Pub.  In honor of the 50th anniversary of “It was twenty years ago today…” we are being asked to include the word “pepper” (as in Sgt. Pepper) somewhere in our poem.  Join us and enjoy!

  1. I’ll probably get lynched for this but I really dislike the Beatles and Pink Floyd and have never listened to the Moody Blues except for Nights in White Satin that was a hit single when I was a kid. I admire you getting these people into a poem 🙂

    • Yeah, they’re all pretty old and dotty… it took awhile to get them into a poem. I left out The Who, Zep, and the Stones… but they didn’t do concepts. Oh, wait, The Who did… twice I think. Anyway… this is the music my middle schoolers and many in high school listen to, because, as many of them have so articulately have declared, “Our music sucks!” I’m not a big Beatle fan… mostly. No lynching here!

    • I think the Nehru jacket fad lasted about 30 minutes. Hippies, on the other hand, have the staying power (and charm) of cockroaches and Keith Richards (guitarist for the Rolling Stones). By the way… I stole that joke — and modified it accordingly — but I don’t remember from whom.

  2. Oh my….misty eyed am I reading this and listening to this. First: LOVE the Sgt Peppers album — still have the vinyl even though we haven’t had a “record player” i years. Second: have always loved John Denver and to see him here, in this film, so young and alive….oh my. Third: I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking, OMG, 64…that is sooooo old and laughing about it with my then college boyfriend! We’ve now been married 47 years and haver recently celebrated #70. 64…sounds young! Sort of like the “aging” of George Orwell’s 1984! Well done….I REALLY enjoyed this! Thank you 🙂

  3. I think Jagger is in his 70’s too–senior rockers–Jagger always said, ” I won’t be shaking my ass out there when I’m 60!” By the by, the essential question seems to be “where’s the pepper?” I couldn’t find it in your fine poem; of course, I’m old & my eyes are not what they used to be; smile.
