In Over My Head

“Only the water is safe.” – Jim Harrison

I stay in the deep end.

The shadows of ripples

on the bottom tell me

which way the wind blows.

When you get in you

look for a hole, a crevice

in which to hide from

the creatures that lurk.

Teeth sharp as razors,

jaws that clamp tight,

pincer movements,

vice closes down, locks.

The creatures that lurk

in this office are sharp,

seldom do their shadows

tell you which way the wind blows.

I stay in the deep end,

but to tell you the truth,

leaving the wading pool

was a fatal mistake…

office dwellers can be killers.

This is part of “28 Days of Unreason”

based on prompts taken from poems

by Jim Harrison.
